Culture: Why It’s the Hottest Topic In Business Today

After reading through a few different articles about culture, I decided to choose this one because it didn’t only define and apply culture to business, but also gave great examples. As explained in this article good culture has become a very popular thing to job seekers. As we are discussing culture this week I thought that this article gave great examples as to how some companies are excelling in employee satisfaction, while others are average or below. Culture is defined as a “set of behaviors, values, artifacts, reward systems, and rituals that make up your organization.” There are resources out there that are giving employees and job seekers the ability to rate and see ratings of culture within a workplace. If a company is doing culture right, then anyone who is even just visiting a company should be able to identify their culture within just a few minutes of being there. The way that employees present themselves, treat the customers, and treat their co workers is very important in making this first impression of culture. When seeking a job in the future I think that this will be a great thing to keep in mind. If the culture of a company is one that you enjoy, then enjoying your job will be that much easier.

This article was a great study in culture in the workplace. I found this to be a useful tool in expanding what I had read in the chapter about culture. My understanding of culture from reading the chapter was that it is how the managers and employees conduct themselves within an organization, but these examples showed that it goes much deeper than that!

I think that this was a great article to choose for this weeks topic which is culture. There are times when I have even for myself experienced a moment of defining one companies culture, whether it be walking into a dentist office or even when I went and toured Microsoft. You get certain vibes from these companies. For example: Microsoft had people wearing jeans and things that were comfortable to them, they had entertainment areas where they could go and play ping pong or even play xbox when the day was just getting a little too overwhelming and everyone was so friendly. This created an enjoyable culture for that particular company. After reading the article it made me see that there was much more to a business's culture than just their values and behaviors, it also went as deep as to what their mission statement was. Great topic to cover!

This article demonstrates all types of culture in the workforce. The reading points out that “Culture” is the set of behaviors, values, artifacts, reward system and rituals that make up an organization. It even talked about leadership. I believe if you have a great leader, you will have a great product. I feel in the organization I work for we lack in this area. Since we don’t have strong leadership, you find that goals aren’t being met, people aren’t sure what the goals are, and you find more negative in the work place. A great leader can either make or break an organization. A Great Leader comes a great team, but if you lack that leadership role, then you really don’t have a team. If you don’t have leadership as part of your culture, then you will have a weak organization.

The article covers many different kinds of companies and the different cultures that each has. Ultimately, the culture of the company comes from how a good leader treats his/her employees. Identifying the culture of a company can be accomplished in a few minutes from the moment you walk in the door. It depends upon how one is greeted and the visual perception of the main office and first impression of the individual representing the company. One of the best places that I had the chance to observe a great culture was at Pike’s Place Fish Market in Seattle it is an environment that just breathes positivity. Our system has had many accomplishments and resources that other systems do not have because of the leadership and vision of the team. With the new changes that have been made within the last month the culture is one of great negativity due to the actions of the board.

I found this article very relatable to my current place of employment and I could not be happier with the culture I work in daily. When a company has a good culture, it reflects in having happy employees that want to come to work each day and be involved in everything they are doing. I love going to work everyday and being able to be myself, wear whatever I want, and have a voice when I feel something could be changed to make a process or something in our environment better. What a great topic!

This is a great article on a topic that is extremely important in today's business world. The culture of a company can be seen from the outside world to some degree, but the real culture is something that the employees feel and are a part of on a daily basis. I feel that culture is very important in employee satisfaction, and I know that it can make or break a job for some people. I have worked at a company that has a very established and unique culture, and it was very fulfilling compared to my current job. I was forced to take a different job as my wife and I moved in order for her to go to Grad school, and I never realized how important culture was until I began working for a company with a not very established or fulfilling culture. It really does make a big difference in job satisfaction!

This article does a good job explaining how culture is attracting top talent in high demand work forces. Especially in the tech world where cutting edge graduates are needed to stay in business. The organizational culture of todays top employers is changing to a more freedom with responsibility approach as used by Netflix. However i feel the article is focused on artifacts alone defining and selling culture. I feel performance expectations and while maintaining an organizations values is more important to having an engaged culture than a beer bash and unlimited vacation as described in the article. That culture may be acceptable in an independent tech environment. The work environment for a team of workers that need to produce in a manufacturing or service setting where you need people to be at work at a specific time could not allow the frivilowus freedom like google or other tech companies can. Overall I feel the article fell short of complete ethnography as there was not any mention of spirit or diversity plays a role in common day culture.

I think culture is super important in the work place. This article does an awesome job describing how important it really is. If the culture isn't something people want to be apart of, the company is going to suffer because of it. If the atmosphere is off than how can they make strides to the future. I know when i have worked in a place where the culture isn't the greatest, I don't want to do my best work. People want to be comfortable and secure in their work areas. When a culture is positive and inviting than that gives room to grow and develop into some thin special. The last 2 years i have been hearing more and more about culture and what it is exactly. Its crazy to think that it has caught fire so much lately. It is fun to be on the other side of it and be learning about it.

I really like the article you chose. It shows how important culture is in a workplace. The workplace culture is a great way to get to know a business. Depending upon what the cultural feel of the business is, I feel that it would affect how I would work with others. Without a good culture, it would be difficult to work there, because a good culture needs leadership. Leadership is what I think sets the tone for what kind of culture the a business creates. It was great to see the examples they used to justify what culture is and what it should be.
