PAR 9: Host Tasha Piehl

I think this is a good article to go hand in hand with this weeks chapter 9.  The book focused on ideas of the different kinds of leadership theories.  These included trait leadership, situational leadership, transnational leadership and discursive leadership.  Communication, as we already know, is major key in organizations.  But it's also important to empower your employees and set good examples for them to follow.  A good leader is a role model, gives credit to good work, and being able to commit to working with others around them.

    I think you did a great job with finding this article! I really liked that right at the begging they talked about how you need to be a leader and be able to communicate. They said that you can have a ton of knowledge in your field but if you can not transfer that to your employees than what is the point. I also really liked how they talked about keeping your employees in the loop so that they feel like they have a purpose. I have always thought that if the people under yo look up and see that you love your job and that you show it and are excited about it than they will feel the same and really work harder for you. You need to empower those that you are in charge of. They need a leader that cares and that talks to people. It is important and crucial that this happens. You can't just know everything. You have to lead.

    Perfect article for this week’s readings. You have to have great communication skills in order to have a great leader. I think those who are on management level need to continually take communication classes. I think managers forget what a good leader is. If you don’t have those skills than you can’t lead the team. I think some leaders don’t understand the two words that speaks volume, “Thank You!” Those two words speaks volumes for an employee to feel noticed and that someone cares. A good leader will have a good employee if they feel they are appreciated and that they count.

    I really enjoyed the article this week. In order to be an effective and good leader, one must be able to communicate effectively with people. If a leader cannot communicate effectively then they become more of a manager in an authoritative state. People in today's generation do not want to work for someone who is not transparent, being open and honest about certain situations, and is not willing to be a leader.

    This article went along quite well with chapter 9. My favorite part about this article was the employee empowerment section. I think that empowering employees and trusting them is the best way to train competent employees and have employees that stick around.

    Very interesting article and how it applies to what is being covered in the chapter. It establishes the connection between leadership and communication. Whether you communicate using meetings, emails, text messages, memos, etc.. it is finding a way to provide guidance and information to each and every employee. I believe that a person in charge of an organization has to lead by example and help out throughout the whole organization. The leader that does this earns the respect from their employees and will get more buy in for the future of the organization. Strong leaders are usually one of the first ones at work and the last ones to leave at night, which does show employees how dedicated you are to the organization.

    Good choice in article. It goes directly with the discussion made on leadership and communication in the book chapter. This one of my favorite types of communication to learn about. I think that leadership is such a powerful role to play in life. There are so many life situations that require leadership and knowing how to communicate properly in order be the best leader possible is also important. There is a big difference between being a leader and being a boss, and I think that this article does a great job of hitting the key points that differentiate the two different roles. A leader works along side their employees or other members of a group where as a boss just tells and makes them do what they want them to do without providing any help.

    Communication is a vital tool to have in your leadership toolbox that evolves and grows as you do with time and experience in leadership. The article talks about the importance of delegation through empowerment. If questioning if you are delegating the right things; the situational leadership model on p.272 can serve as a delegation/empowerment model as well. A habit of character to practice with reward is to praise in public and discipline in private or in other words the carrot is mightier than the stick.

    I really liked the article this week. I enjoyed learning about the different leadership theories. The article emphasizes that communication is a large part of leadership. Managers need to have an effective way to communicate with the employees. These managers also need to appreciate their employees to keep them motivated. Without recognition of employees they lose the motivation to continue what they are doing, it also gives the employees a sense of knowing they are doing their job right. Managers being a role model set a great example for employees who want to move up to a higher position.

    I really enjoyed this article. We obviously all know by now that communication is extremely important in the managerial field, but I am very glad that it mentioned being a role model. All of the good managers I have had in my work experience have practiced what they preached for lack of a better phrase. It is very hard to work for a manager who does not lead by example because it can often make things frustrating especially if the employee is in need of hands on explanations or examples. It was nice to see an article that branched off of communication and mentioned this.
