I picked out this article because it talks about the different types of communication used by human resources in a business setting. The Human Resources Approach was the last of three talked about in our chapter this week, and I feel that it is the most commonly adopted today in the business world. The article talks about the different ways the human resources department would have to communicate with employees and why it is important. This aligns with our text because of the fact that a lot of companies use the human resources approach and because it has to do with the communication within the department, which is obviously what this class is about. While my last couple jobs have had HR departments, I have never really thought about how necessary it is for the HR employees to be able to communicate effectively. They deal with a lot of important things that need to understood by employees, such as benefits, wages, paid time off, etc. If they are not communicating effectively and the employees are not understanding what is going on, there could be issues in regards to the things that HR deals with. It was interesting for me to think about the types of communication used by HR and how important it is for them to be able to communicate effectively, and for me to be able to relate it to past work experiences.

ReplyDeleteIt is very essential in the workplace to have communication. Having a strong human resources group to effectively and efficiently communicate to the other employees in the workforce makes the workflow of the environment a lot more desirable. From everything from everyday tasks to important topics, it's important that everyone understands fully what is being talked about. Having worked in business settings before it's not only important for the top executives to know how to communicate but for even the assistants to know how to communicate as well. After reading the article I made me understand more how important it is to make good communication impressions on the first day of work. It's also a good thing to make sure the employee handbook is well understood and communicated in words that everyone can understand. Business information is also a very important to be able to talk about, for instance in my work environment i have to take the phone calls for my boss and relay them onto her so it's important that i can communicate them effectively.

Human Resources is defiantly the first line of communication to applicants. I had to fill in for our Human Resources Department one day, and I give my hat off to those ladies. Between the phones ringing, people wanting to drop their applications off, the website wasn’t working, to you name it, and it was crazy. The Human Resource Department is where you do find out what is happening in that organization. Just like the article pointed out, you have employee orientation, employee handbooks, benefits and wages, business information, and employee notices. It is all driven from this one department, but this one department is also very responsible to make sure the information is correct and the communication is very clear. You really do need to be very knowledgeable in this field.

ReplyDeleteSome of the bigger business systems incorporate the human resource departments for providing a service of hiring and selecting new employees for their organization. When new employees go to work for these companies they usually spend one to two days going over basic policies, documents, expectations of the company, facility tours and meet and greets. These all help foster how the climate of the business operates. This is not only part of the human resources arena, but can also be tied to the human relations approach. Small business do this on a smaller scale by having the manager do on the job training with the new employee and/or have other employees help out. The better informed your employees are going to be starting a new job or maintaining the current position the more efficient the system operates.

Communication in the workplace is so important and needs to be done effectively in order to have good communication. Being transparent with employees and with customers is vital to having healthy communication. In the reading this week, the book did talk about how the human resources perspective is the most important and the most common in today's workplace. I work in a place where transparency is a huge factor and open communication is encouraged. This makes our workplace feel like we can talk to each other and don't need to hide anything, which I absolutely love.

I found this article and this week's reading very relevant to what is going on with my own workplace and company. We recently had a company meeting that was demanded by the station I work at, because so many employees were having issues with understanding current policies. We, as employees, were feeling left out in the dark because of how our management did not send emails of memos to us. This strongly relates to how important human relations is an approach of organizational communication.

The practice of implementing HR departments as part of an organization is a common practice with orgs that have a large number of members. I think it creates efficiency for a manager to focus on his main objectives instead of trying to provide answers for questions related to benefits or appropriate discipline for certain actions. A classical managed firm would potentially leave the benefits and discipline up to the sole discretion of a manager who could make a decision that could violate ethical standards for treatment of employees. Small businesses today, that cannot afford an HR Department operate by a managers awareness of safe work, and labor laws as the foundation for human relations standards but use their own discretion to provide what they feel is communicating enough with their employees.

The Human Resources approach, I see a lot within the places that I hope to apply for following graduation. They seem to be more organized and run more efficiently when they have a human resources department. The previous places I have worked would have the managers hire the employees, not only that, they would have the managers make the schedules and explain any kind of policy or benefit to the employees. I think that the human resources approach is used in most of the businesses today. Smaller business can't afford to hire people to make up an entire department just for hiring, but I still think that it is the most efficient way to communicate benefits and policies with future/new employees.
The letting go of employees is very important. I feel that not letting people know that they won't have a job is huge. Its crazy to think that people get 60 days before. 60 days to figure out a job. to find a way to support a family. That blows my mind. I do think it is a nice gesture to give people that amount of time however when you think about it, that isn't a lot of time to get all of that figured out. The job market can be miserable and being let go from a job can be devastating.

The human resource approach is used as an effort to keep the communication of employees within a company on the same page. All employees are encouraged by human resources to be organized and participate in the dialogue presented by an organization. Communication that is transmitted out of the Human Resource department is usually some of the most important and constant information that is shared across the board of all employees no matter what level of authority they hold within the company. I personally have had both positive and negative experiences with HR department that I have worked with. I can remember a specific example of when the HR director did not communicate well and ended up having to cancel a second session of a training source due to her lack of knowledge in communicating the issue that was at hand.
